The Gear Works has greatly improved its internal spline and keyway broaching service with the recent installation of a 75 HP, 50 ton, horizontal broaching machine with a 72″ stroke . Broaching is a machining process that finishes a simple or complex bore by pulling a multi-tooth tool called a broach through the part. Because the part is finished in one pass, broached parts are inexpensive and true to size.

The Gear works is proud to have participated in NASA’s exploration project that successfully deployed two robots to the planet Mars last January. The government’s research and development facility, Jet Propulsion Laboratories of Pasadena, California, was responsible for design and construction of the space vehicles, called Landers, and the mobile geology labs, called Rovers, which were contained in the Landers. The $820,000,000 Mars Exploration Mission was designed to reveal the role of water in the planet’s history, and to determine if it may have ever sparked any form of life.

The Gear Works is proud to announce the commissioning of additional capacity and productivity in its mid-range gear cutting department with the installation of a Mitsubishi CNC gear hobbing machine, model GB100CNC. Now, gears up to 39” diameter can be cut in small order quantities with the same efficiencies as large lot production. The 33,000-pound machine consists of a robust cast iron frame that insures maximum rigidity when aggressive feed rates are employed. A Fanuc CNC controller insures the accurate synchronization of all five machine axis, including “crowning” capabilities.
