Just Installed: 50-Ton Detroit Broaching Machine

The Gear Works has greatly improved its internal spline and keyway broaching service with the recent installation of a 75 HP, 50 ton, horizontal broaching machine with a 72″ stroke . Broaching is a machining process that finishes a simple or complex bore by pulling a multi-tooth tool called a broach through the part. Because the part is finished in one pass, broached parts are inexpensive and true to size.

Since 1918 the Ballard Bridge has served as a major link to N.W. Seattle by providing access for 52,000 vehicles a day over the Lake Washington Ship Canal. During the year, the bridge will open approximately 5,200 times for boat traffic.

Gear Grinding Capacity Increased for Large Pinion Shafts

The Gear Works is pleased to announce that recent modifications to its Gleason – Pfauter P1600G gear grinding machine have greatly expanded pinion shaft grinding capacity. Now, large pinion and spline shafts, up to seventeen feet in overall length, can economically obtain profile tooth grinding to AGMA Q-13+ tolerances.

Large CNC Turning and Milling Center

The Gear Works is pleased to announce its latest acquisition and installation of world class machining technology: 72″ Giddings and Lewis Vertical Turning & Milling Center. Now, large parts can be turned, milled, drilled, tapped, and inspected in one efficient set-up by utilizing multiple on-board machining functions, such as the 25 H.P. live milling spindle and 12 station tool changer.

New Gearboxes for Bridge Pass the Load Test

When Halverson Construction Company was awarded the contract to refurbish the lift machinery on the Joe Page Bridge, they turned to The Gear Works to provide the replacement span lift gearboxes.

The Gear Works Goes To Mars

The Gear works is proud to have participated in NASA’s exploration project that successfully deployed two robots to the planet Mars last January. The government’s research and development facility, Jet Propulsion Laboratories of Pasadena, California, was responsible for design and construction of the space vehicles, called Landers, and the mobile geology labs, called Rovers, which were contained in the Landers. The $820,000,000 Mars Exploration Mission was designed to reveal the role of water in the planet’s history, and to determine if it may have ever sparked any form of life.

The Gear Works Adds More CNC Gear Hobbing Capacity!

The Gear Works is proud to announce the commissioning of additional capacity and productivity in its mid-range gear cutting department with the installation of a Mitsubishi CNC gear hobbing machine, model GB100CNC. Now, gears up to 39” diameter can be cut in small order quantities with the same efficiencies as large lot production. The 33,000-pound machine consists of a robust cast iron frame that insures maximum rigidity when aggressive feed rates are employed. A Fanuc CNC controller insures the accurate synchronization of all five machine axis, including “crowning” capabilities.

Increased Productivity with MAZAK Integrex 50 Turning and Milling Center

The Gear Works is proud to announce its latest investment in additional machining capacity with the acquisition of a MAZAK Integrex 50 Turning and Milling Center. Now, complex mid-size parts can be turned, bored, milled, drilled and slotted in one efficient set-up. This multi-functional capability eliminates the need for time-consuming queues in front of different machine centers.
